Mental illnesses are very common; in fact, they are more common than cancer, diabetes or heart disease. According to the U.S. Surgeon General, an estimated 23% of American adults (those ages 18 and older) or about 44 million people, and about 20% of American children suffer from a mental disorder during a given year.

Even though mental disorders are widespread in the population, the main burden of illness is concentrated in a much smaller proportion, about 6 percent, or 1 in 17 Americans, who suffer from a serious mental illness (one that significantly interferes with functioning). It is estimated that mental illness affects 1 in 5 families in America.

Further, more than 7 million American adults, and more than 5 million children and adolescents suffer from a serious mental condition (one that significantly interferes with functioning).

Your child has just been evaluated for ADHD, and as you sat there being told what the condition is all about, it occurs to you that perhaps you have the disorder as well. Your attention span is flighty, you tend to be disorganized, and you can’t even sit still long enough to watch a movie. Could you have ADHD as well?

It’s possible that your child may have inherited the disorder from you; after all, the predisposition for ADHD is genetic. The tricky part about having an ADHD child when you yourself have ADHD is that you have to manage the symptoms of two people – yourself and your child’s. At first, it sounds like a case of the blind leading the blind, but with experience you will learn to help your child manage ADHD despite your own symptoms. Here are some ADND parenting tips to help you get started.

Go on an ADHD diet with the whole family

Many symptoms of ADHD are actually just allergic reactions to food substances. Unlike classic allergies, which manifest themselves as physical symptoms (e.g. sneezing, watery eyes, rashes), these food allergies show up as behavioral disturbances. This happens because foods with gluten, casein, phosphate, or artificial additives affect brain wave activation patterns, causing mixed-up signals and explosive behavior.

The tricky thing about dealing with food allergies is that there is no test that will identify what specific foods you or your child is allergic to. A good place to start is an elimination diet. This special diet involves “rotating” food groups to give them enough time to leave the body. If you notice any behavioral improvements, they are probably caused by avoiding a specific allergenic food. There are many books that will teach you how to do a rotation diet successfully. You can also try going on a gluten-free casein-free diet, where all wheat and dairy foods are eliminated. Gluten in wheat and casein in dairy are known to trigger ADHD symptoms by altering brain wave patterns and causing gut imbalances.

For best results, the whole family has to go on the ADHD diet. Not only do you hit two birds with one stone (you and your child), but it will also prevent your child from sneaking in some forbidden foods.

Anticipate problems and solutions

You can make your life easier by learning to work around situations that will trigger your child’s symptoms. For instance, if your child gets fussy during shopping trips, leave him at home at the babysitter when you have to run to the mall.

Take a break

Sometimes it helps to get a babysitter to watch out for your child, even if you’ll just be staying at home. You too need some time and space from parenting to pursue your interests or simply to rest.

Get outside help

Aside from seeing a professional clinician who can help you treat your ADHD, there is one other professional you should consider – a cleaning lady or a professional organizer. If you can’t seem to keep the house organized or clear the clutter from room, a cleaning lady can help you sort things out and make your home neater than it’s ever been.

Positive mental health is a great way to ensure you lead a long, happy and healthy life. Maintaining your mental health is easier than most people think and will have a significant impact on your everyday life. Here are the top things you can do to help promote positive mental health in you and your children:

1. Eat healthy. Eating fast food 3 times a week and downing a few cold ones before bed might be easier than making a home-cooked meal and more enjoyable than drinking a cold glass of water but it won’t do a whole lot for your health. Eating home-cooked foods (especially fruits and vegetables) and staying away from the fast food joints will help you achieve the healthy lifestyle you desire.

2. Drink lots of water. To maintain a healthy lifestyle, average individuals are expected to consume at least eight glasses of water a day. And while this seems like it may be a lot, it’s actually not. Eight glasses is almost equivalent to filling up your water bottle a few times between waking up and going to bed. Remember, if you work out, you will need to increase your water intake to compensate for the water you’re burning off while exercising. Drinking water will detoxify your body and restore it back to a healthy state – especially after drinking coffee or alcoholic beverages.

3. Kick the bad habits. We’ve already mentioned it a few times but eliminating significant alcohol intake will have positive results on your mental health. Likewise, kicking other bad habits like smoking and drinking considerable amounts of coffee will also help keep your mental health at its best.

4. De-stress. Stress is one of the leading causes for poor mental health. When you’re stressed out, your body has to work harder to keep up and, overtime, it will take its toll on your body and your brain. Next time something stressful happens, try lighting some candles and taking a bath. If that doesn’t work for you, try letting off some steam by going to the gym or going for a run. Keeping a positive frame of mind will promote positive mental health and eliminate undue stress on your brain.

Some important mental health problems that occur during old age include dementia, delirium, psychosis, schizophrenia and depression. Elders suffering with mental health problems tend to have abnormal cognitive and behavioral patterns that are often associated with decreased ability to function. Other prominent symptoms that elders usually complain include sleep disturbances, a change in appetite and mood differences.

In most cases, mental health problems in elders that require treatment are quite conveniently ignored. Improper treatment of mental illnesses in elders seems to the most prominent reason contributing to high suicidal rate in these people. Many of these people require specialized mental health services. However, there are several reasons that contribute to improper mental health services to the elderly. Some of them are listed below:

1. In most cases, elders are reluctant to undergo treatment for their mental health disorder. They continue to harbor their minds with discomfort and stigmas, thereby showing resistance to leaving their homes and going to a rehabilitation center or a clinic.

2. Our society has never shown respect or dignity for individuals suffering from mental health problems. Even a mental health professional is apprehensive about an elderly person with such condition. Beliefs and attitudes of these professionals do have a significant influence on the quality of medical care provided to the patients.

3. Medical negligence is another big hurdle. In many situations, symptoms of mental health diseases are just written off as indicators of ageing.

Other major hurdles include scarcity in federal and state-supported community prevention programs for elders, inadequate private health insurance coverage and lack of well-trained mental health staff.

It’s a fact, exercise like aerobics not only has a positive effect on your body as a whole, but also on your brain in particular. Exercising is a great way to increase your positive outlook on life, by boosting production of the “gang of four” hormones and neurotransmitters in your brain, namely dopamine, serotonin, melatonin and norepinephrine. Between them, these natural chemical substances can make life seem more enjoyable, less stressed and better focused.

However, aerobics also has longer lasting benefits as well. Besides the immediate effects of stimulating the right chemical production in your brain, aerobics also promotes mental health on a long-term basis, when done regularly and under the right conditions. It’s a link that is regularly reinforced by scientific research on the subject, which also shows that diet is an important factor as well. Brainpower and brain fitness can suffer not only from a lack of oxygen-enriched blood that exercise brings, but also from eating too many high-sugar foods. Although the brain needs glucose in order to function at optimal capacity, it is the body’s job to manufacture this to order when you eat the right foods, rather than trying to inject sugar directly into your system.
